Startup in Windows 10 or Windows 11

Automating the startup of your used applications can be a time-saving strategy. When you add programs to the startup list in Windows, you can ensure that they will automatically open every time you start your computer.

Using Windows 11

Open the Run Dialog

To begin, simultaneously, press the Windows+R keys on your keyboard. Run dialog box will open, which allows you to navigate quickly within your computer.

 Run Dialog

Access the Startup Folder

In the Run dialog box, type “shell; startup.” Hit Enter. This command will take you directly to your computer’s folder.

Add Your Program

A new window will appear, showing the current startup items. To add a program, drag its shortcut into this folder. You can create a shortcut by right-clicking on the program in the Start Menu. Selecting “Create Shortcut.” Once you’ve placed the shortcut in the folder, your selected program will automatically launch whenever you start your computer.

Using Windows 11

Windows 11 is quite similar to its version, making it easy to transition from a system.

Launch the Run Dialog

Like in Windows 10. Press the Windows key + R to bring up the Run dialog.

Launch the Run Dialog

Enter the Special Command

Again, type “shell; startup” in the dialog box. Hit Enter. This command works perfectly fine in Windows 11.

Enter the Special Command

Step 3: Drag and Drop

When the startup folder opens, drag the shortcut of your desired program into it. If you don’t have a shortcut on your desktop, remember that you can create one from the Start Menu. Your programs will automatically launch when you start your Windows 11 computer.

Using Task Manager in both Windows 10 and Windows 11

There’s also a way to manage startup programs from the Task Manager, which applies to both Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Open Task Manager

Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc or right-click on the taskbar and select “Task Manager.”

Open Task Manager

Go to the Startup Tab

Within the Task Manager window, navigate to the ‘Startup’ tab, where you’ll find a list of programs turned on or off at startup.

Go to the Startup Tab

Enable or Disable

While you cannot add programs from this location, you can manage the items by turning them on or off. Select the program. Click the ‘Enable’ or ‘Disable’ buttons at the bottom right.

Adding many programs to your startup list can slow your system’s boot time. If there are programs that you seldom use, it would be best to keep them off the list.
